![]() Auxiliary aids and services are available upon request to individuals with disabilities. ![]() People for People is an equal opportunity employer/program. Without volunteers, our program would be significantly reduced. It can be daily during the lunch hour, once a week or whenever your time allows. Volunteers are not just seniors, they are all ages, from high school to concerned fully employed people who want to help out during their lunch hour. The Meals On Wheels program of Yakima County depends on volunteers in various capacities to operate senior dining rooms (when open) and home delivery. The idea behind volunteers was simple: using seniors to perform much of the work at meal sites and with home delivery gave the seniors opportunities to maintain physical activities, those who felt they couldn’t afford to pay for meals would have a chance to ‘work’ for their meal, and above all, it gave them a sense of purpose, the feeling of being needed and for many – a reason to live. Therefore, the funding only covers the basic program necessities of food product, equipment, supplies and minimal staffing to cook the meals. When congress created the Older American Nutrition Program, it was created with the intent that many of the jobs be done with volunteers. Provides dog and cat food, pet supplies such as cat litter, beds, leashes, collars and treats for homebound seniors on the home delivery program. If delivery is not an option to the senior then a family member or friend can pick up the 7 day frozen meals once a week at one of our dining rooms or central office. Weekly frozen meal delivery is available for those that need it. The home delivery program is by qualification based on the senior being homebound and have no one to prepare a meal for them and are no longer able to prepare a nutritious meal on their own. Seniors at all dining rooms can choose between traditional American or authentic Mexican meals SEVEN (7) DAY FROZEN MEAL HOME DELIVERY PROGRAM We suggest reservations be made at least the day before you plan to attend by 3:00 PM, to assure that a meal will be there for you. Transportation is available to our dining rooms in most locations if needed. Our meal sites offer a chance to meet new friends and enjoy healthy, nutritious meals in friendly surroundings. 2 servings (4 oz) of bread or alternate (pasta, rice, etc)įunding is provided by the Older Americans Act and Washington State Aging and Disability Services through a grant from the Southeast Washington Office of Aging and Long Term Care Conference of Government and donations made by seniors and private individuals and businesses.Ĭongregate program serves hot meals in various locations throughout Yakima County.1 serving (4 oz) of fruit or vegetable substitute.2 servings (4 oz) of vegetables or fruit substitute.1 serving (3 oz) of meat, fish or poultry or equivalent. Our program serves healthy meals that meet 1/3 of the USDA requirements. The health of the senior receiving meals through either program is better, they have fewer doctor visits and the cost of the program is offset by the savings to the system. For the cost of 3 days institutionalization (hospital or nursing home) we can feed the senior for a year. That follow-up also revealed two other major findings: Prior to that date Yakima County was in charge of the Meals On Wheels program.įollow-up studies on the effectiveness of the nutrition programs has shown that Meals On Wheels intervention extends the time a senior can stay in their home instead of being placed into a nursing home by at least 3 months. People For People took over the program on July 1, 2011. Both programs intended to increase the health, quality of life and extend the time in which a senior can remain independent and in their own home. The Older Americans Act of 1965 was signed into law on Jit was created to address a serious health issue of America’s senior citizens: poor or inadequate nutrition. One of the many programs created under the act was the Nutrition Program which included: congregate (dining rooms) and home delivered meals.
